Handling Tips
At Carando, we take great care to ensure our products are not only delicious and healthy but also safe for you and your family. Here are some basic guides to help you select, store and handle meats safely.
Tips for handling pork and other meats:
Smart Shopping
- Refrigerated meats should be cold and frozen meats should be solid — if they aren’t don’t buy them
- Stay away from meats with torn, bulging, dented or cracked packaging
- Don't buy anything after the "use by" date on the package has passed
At Home
- If you’re not using the meat immediately, freeze it right away
- When storing meat, make sure your refrigerator is set at 40° F and your freezer is set at, or below, 0° F.
- Before you handle meat and afterwards, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water
- Make sure to thaw meats in the refrigerator or microwave, never on the counter
- Always immediately cook meat that has been defrosted in a microwave
- Always marinate meat in the refrigerator and discard leftover marinades (never reuse them)
- Do not use the same surface for cutting meat and vegetables
- Refrigerate leftovers within two hours after serving
- Reheat leftovers until the middle is hot before serving
- As a general rule, once the package is open, use product within 5 to 7 days
